THE CONDITION OF MANUFACTURING AND WHERE NEW JOBS WILL EMERGE
In the years between 2006 and 2016, 252,000 new manufacturing jobs will be created but 1,500,000 jobs will be lost according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The new jobs will be found in:
Pharmaceutical and medicine - 69,000 jobs Animal slaughter - 60,000 jobs

JOB LOSSES AND GAINS BY INDUSTRY

Food Manufacturing - Animal, grain, sugar, fruit, dairy, and seafood will be reduced by 62,000 jobs. Animal slaughtering, bakeries, and tortilla producers will add 64,000 jobs.

Beverage, Tobacco, Textiles, Apparel, and Leather will lose 106,000 jobs.

Chemical Manufacturing - basic chemical, resin, synthetic rubber, pesticide, fertilizer, paint, and soap will eliminate 90,000 jobs. Pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing will add 96,000 jobs.

Nonmetallic Mineral Manufacturing - clay and glass will eliminate 22,000 jobs. Cement, concrete products, lime, and gypsum will add 21,000 jobs.

Primary and Fabricated Metal Manufacturing - iron, steel, aluminum, foundries, forging, cutlery, boiler, hardware, spring, machine shops, and coatings will eliminate 292,000 jobs. Architectural and structural metals will add 23,000 jobs.

Furniture Manufacturing - household, institutional, kitchen, office, and fixtures will experience 37,000 job losses. Other furniture related products will add 1,000 jobs.

Miscellaneous Manufacturing - will lose 1,000 jobs. Miscellaneous medical equipment will add 4,000 jobs.
The metropolitan areas with the most manufacturing growth in the last 12 months and the last 10 years include Las Vegas, Bakersfield, Napa, and Stockton, California, Amarillo, Texas, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Projections to 2016 are not available by metropolitan area.
Finding a job in the Manufacturing sector will be easier in the industry/location combinations that are growing. The pharmaceutical industry for example is growing the fastest (based on the last 12 months and 10 years) in California and North Carolina ... and the pharmaceutical industry is projected to have the most new jobs by 2016.
